Message Yes, if you try to equate one hurricane to one tornado, the hurricane has much more widespread destructive potential. However, tornadoes kill more people annually in the US on average than hurricanes do (linky).

What makes tornadoes more threatening to an individual is how quickly they form and how poorly we can forecast when/where/how big. How many days warning did the folks in LA have, 2, 3, 4? Your average tornado victim gets 5-10 minutes warning.

As far as sheer destructive power at a point, tornado wind speeds can top 300+ mph.
